Are we missing something?

BY HEATHER WARLICK-MOORE
For people needing organ transplants, every day can be filled with questions and fears: Will I receive the organ I need to survive? If I do, will my body accept the organ? How will I pay for a transplant?

These are questions Samantha Gurley, 24, of Moore, grapples with daily. She is waiting hopefully for the phone call that will change her life.

Gurley needs a new liver due to autoimmune hepatitis and cirrhosis. As her health declines, her position on transplant waiting lists moves up.

And while her friends and family can do little to speed the process of finding her a new liver, they can find ways to raise money to help pay for her transplant and a lifetime of care afterward.

With the help of the National Foundation for Transplants (NFT), Gurley’s friends and family have formed a committee of sorts to raise money for her care. NFT is a nonprofit organization that provides fundraising expertise and advocacy to transplant patients by organizing fundraising campaigns in patients’ communities.

'We know that when someone gets a diagnosis, and they learn that the only hope is for them to have a transplant, that’s overwhelming on its own,” said Mandy Sherer, spokesperson for NFT. 'And then they hear the price, and it’s like they’re in sticker shock.”

In Gurley’s case, a liver transplant could cost about $500,000. And follow-up care is estimated at about $100,000. Even with insurance, co-pays can be financially devastating. The foundation creates an account for each patient it assists, and 95 percent of all money raised goes directly to that fund.

'Most people aren’t comfortable asking for money, and they’re sure not comfortable asking for money for themselves,” Sherer said.

There are many benefits for using a foundation. All donations are tax-deductible. More importantly, the donations are not considered taxable income to the patient. If they were, many patients who receive government assistance with their medical bills could be bumped out of the income bracket to be eligible for that assistance.

The National Foundation for Transplants also provides fundraising support by handling public relations and promotion of the fundraising events.

Gurley’s local fundraising committee is made up of devoted friends and family. The chairwoman, one of Gurley’s best friends, Laura Hatcher, is helping arrange a fundraising scavenger hunt/poker run event. Proceeds from the poker run will go directly to Gurley’s fund.

'Until you have a situation like this, you don’t know how greatly it can impact you,” Hatcher said. Her goal is to eventually raise $100,000 for Gurley’s care. 'She’s our friend, she’s our daughter, she’s our niece. Anything that we can do to help her, we will.”
