There are a lot of poker hands that you could choose to play, so it is important to know what beats what. If you learn the poker standing of each hand in relation to one another you will become a better player, requiring less time to think in between rounds and being better equipped to make the right bets at the right time.

The best poker hand is of course the royal flush. This is a straight set of one suit in which the player has the ace, King, Queen, Jack, and ten. Although rare, the royal flush can gift the entire game to a player, so long as they are smart enough to force the other players to raise their bets enough times to get a big win out of it. Directly under the royal flush in poker rankings is the straight flush, which again means five consecutive cards of the same suit, though this time it can start from any number. Keep in mind that the highest straight flush wins – that is to say, a straight flush with a seven high will be beaten by a straight flush with a nine high.

After the straight flush comes four of a kind. This hand will involve one extra card, which has no real use, and the other four cards will be the same number. You could have four tens, for instance. Again, the highest number wins, so your tens might be beaten by four Kings. The next hand down is the full house: this involves two of one number and three of another. An example of this hand would be two nines and three fours. You could find yourself in a situation where the last card dealt changes your hand from a full house to four of a kind, so this is a great set-up!

After this we drop down to the simpler version of the flush. This involves just getting five card of the same suit – there is no need for them to be in consecutive order. Again, you may find yourself just one card out from getting a straight or royal flush with this hand, which can be very disappointing! The straight comes next, and this means a set of five consecutive numbers across any suits. For example, you might have the ten of clubs, nine of clubs, eight of spades, seven of hearts, and six of spades.

Three of a kind is the next hand in the online poker standing, followed swiftly by two pair, both of which are literally what they say on the tin. Moving down into the lower hands which are less likely to win, we next have the one pair, which you must be wary about – remember that even though a pair of twos may look good, they can be beaten by anything from a pair of threes upwards. The last hand is not really a hand at all but simply a collection of whatever you can get, including the highest card on the table to try and beat any other non-hands.
